What do you say? (semi bahh)Can't Post

when your opponent suffers a bad beat and gets knocked out of the tourny?

Playing in a local free game at a bar. Absolutely card dead all night.
Probably the worst string of cards I have had in a long long time. Players
were making fun of me due to my lack of playing. I'm down to about 675 and
finally pick up an ace. Ax UTG to be exact. I move my chips in and say
boldly(and stupidly) "I finally have a hand gang, I'm all in." Everyone
laughs and I got one caller two seats down who almost beat me into the pot
with his chips. He tuurns over JJ and I am in trouble.

Flop: QKQ rainbow. Not good.
Turn: 6. Four suits and I get up to leave
River: KING.

My opponent is livid. gets up, walks away, and generally is steaming. Puts
his last reamining chips in blind and busts on the next hand.

I tried to say something to him but didn't know what I could say. he
walked(stormed) away before I could say anything anyways, but is there
anything you have to say in this kind of situation that does not sound bad
or condescending?

I don't say a word. I am sure others at the table probably said "tough one
buddy" or something to that effect. I just rake the chips in and start
stacking.

Wow. What an ass. As for you, I would just say a quick "Sorry man" if
I said anything at all. I think if you lay a beat on someone (I can't
say this is a really bad beat, you were getting short and had to push
obviously), the less you say is generally better. If he can't stand
losing as a 70-30 favorite, especially in a free bar tourney, poker's
definitely not the game for him. What would he have done if you
flopped the Ace?

A respectful silence would seem appropriate, as anything else, however
well intentioned, might just get you a sock in the jaw.

Or you could just flirt with death, jump up out of your chair, spin around,
and do a victory dance while yelling "Ship it, baby! Ship it!" But that
would be imprudent.

Yeah, it was the way the hand played out that pissed him off. He was pretty
quiet at the table, he never said anything directly to me that was bad(not that
i cared) but it was brutal to him getting rivered like that. I think if the ace
hit the flop or river he would not have been so pissed....

recgroups seems to be down again gang....

Don't know about that, but if you pull this shit at my home game, you're
out!

Seriously, sometimes "sorry, man, that's harsh" is the right thing to say.
In your case, just say nothing, since it's obvious it wouldn't matter
anyway. Sometimes saying nothing is the best course of action.

becuz he walked off.

it didn't help that his buddies at the table were roasting him on the hand
either. Ahhhhhh....poker......

Agree.
1) look sheepish, say nothing
2) look sheepish, say "Sorry Man"
3) or like the other guy suggested, "Pass the Sugar" if you're in the mood
for violence ;-)

Why not just take a page from Scott Fischman's book when his river 7
counterfeited Awada's low pair in the second to last hand of the 2004 $1500 NL?

My big black lab loves to do high-fives...maybe I should bring him along

Mine too actually...they know the diff between "shake" and "High 5"...

I'd bring mine anywhere I wanted to see mass destruction from drool

Well once you see the guy is a jerk by the way he jumps up and starts
steaming, at that point I would just start defending my play by
insisting that it was a classic race situation and that he made a loose
call anyway. Then you mumble something about having to play to win and
that you felt the ace coming. Oh yeah, as you're stacking your chips
you might want to throw out a little whistle and say "wow, big pot."

I was playing in a bar tournament a few weeks ago and some guy with a
ton of chips was raising and reraising everyone. Finally this one chick
at the table decided to defend her blind and reraise him preflop. So of
course she makes a very small reraise and the guy calls. The flop comes
all l low and the guy moves all- in. The girl insta calls for all her
chips , she was pretty deep stacked too. Anyway, they flip the cards
and the guy has like 63 offsuit and hit a 3 on the flop. The girl has
KJ for no pair no draw. lolol. The turn is a K and she jumps up and
goes "THAT'S RIGHT BABY, YOU CALLED ME WITH 63 AND YOU GOT WHAT U
DESERVED!! EVENTUALLY THE ODDS CATCH UP WITH THE DONKS AND THE GOOD
PLAYERS LIKE ME END UP WITH THE CHIPS!!" Then she high fives her
husband sitting next to her and he goes "THAT'S RIGHT HONEY, YOU PLAY
THE GOOD CARDS AND LET THE DONKEYS GO HEEHAW HEEHAW!!"

Funniest thing I ever saw in my life. I felt like pointing out that she
put all her money in as a big underdog after the flop which probably
makes her the donk, but I'm pretty sure I would have beaten to death.

Bar tournaments are so much fun.

When they show that they are pissed and steamed, I don't say a word, and I don't
look at him. If they seem just let down, then I may say, "Sorry" with a little
sympathetic smile and a pat on the table. It works for me, but maybe because I'm
female. LOL

Amazing how little class some people have. How many people get killed
each year in the US during bar tournaments?

If half the stories I read here are true, it must be a pretty big
number.

I never, ever say "Sorry". The fact is you really aren't sorry it
happened and to say so is borderline condescending IMO. I do however
often acknowledge when I put a beat on an opponent by saying "Unlucky".

I always find it amusing or perhaps more accurately bemusing when
people begin to have ridiculously low standards in calling big bets
from overly aggressive players, I mean, instacall with king high? It's
like they think the aggressive player doesn't even have two cards after
a while. I see it all the time.
