Rules; Question about a ruling & Where to find the rules? Can't Post

I would like to know where I could download or view the rules of tournament
poker on-line. If you have a link, please post.

Now my situation and the question.

I played in my first live tournament that had about 130 participants. It
was some kind of league thing where they take over a bar and put up folding
felt tables onto the regular bar tables that are around the dance floor.

In my local casino I go to sometimes, only has 10-15 people play at any
given night for their tourney, when you finish a hand you can toss your
cards up a bit in front of you and everyone can see what you have. The muck
is clearly away from our cards and the dealer is taking care of business for
the game. But in this bar mode league, the felt table just barely gives you
enough room to play and each player takes turn as a dealer. Never mind
having room to really maneuver, you can't even get a drink on the edge of
the table so I didn't bother so I didn't spill on the felt.:-)

As I am playing, a player tells me that I need to not have my cards touch
the other turned down cards in the middle of the table. Now when I say
middle, I mean the cards are kind of scattered around and not really stacked
or moved to an away position. I thank him for telling me as I do want to
learn the rules of a live game.

A few hands later I am battling this player next to me and I take him all
in. I end up throwing my cards out (about 10 inches from my edge I would
think) and they 'are' touching portions of other 'dead' cards on the table.

I have the winning hand clearly. He creates a stir that I have a dead hand.
Most of the other players say let it be and tell me I should take the pot.
I don't really argue and since the game was not that important to me (but
maybe to the guy I took out), I said that I will let the guy have the hand.

To me, I was warned about this and didn't take real caution to keep my cards
next to my edge of the table. I was relaxed and threw the hand out as far
as I normally do at my local casino thinking no big deal. So since I was
told, and I assume those playing in this league know more about rules than
I, felt obligated to let the guy take the pot.

Now this took me to low on chips. I ended up taking another person out and
as she is leaving she comments that she would not have let that guy take the
pot. I just let it go and didn't want to create a stir. I ended up busting
out shortly after and left.

When I went to look up rules somewhere, the closest thing I could come up
with is that the hand 'may' be declared dead, but usually not when it is
clear who the winner is. But I would like to know for sure. My gut tells
me if I had called in a director, they would have sided that I clearly had
the hand and the incidental touch of cards is just that, incidental and that
we need to make some form of allowance for such a small table we are playing
on. The person dealing didn't pick up the dead cards have a clearly defined
muck area.

Any comments on the outcome of how this went down? Should I have called a
director over and fought to keep my hand as the declared winner? Did I have
a decent amount of courtesy to the guy who had a losing hand, but let him
have it?

I will try to find the full rules of poker in tournaments, but if you have a
link, it would be appreciated.

As long as your hand was "tabled" in other words face up on the table (not
in the air in your hand)...you have a live hand
there's also a rule that states..."every attempt will be made to award the
pot to the winning hand"
Hope that helps

Take your pick.

See TDA, Unprotected hand, 29.
Robert's Rules, Dead hand, 2.

Someone will be along to bicker about this shortly.

No one "bickers" with Dr Zen. Someone usually, like now, has to point out
his misunderstanding of any "rule" about anything. (TDA rule 28 is the rule
on unprotected hands ... which is not at issue in the OP case. Rule 29 is
the rule about an attempt to kill the winning hand ... which is applicable
to the OP situation.) In the OP case, the hand is not dead, nor was it
surrendered, nor was it "mucked" by the dealer. The OP should have won the
pot and he might consider avoiding the "game" he was in. (There many
situations that arise when one is discussing an "unprotected" hand being
declared dead. This is not one of them.)

Re: Rules; Question about a ruling & Where to find the rules? [In reply to]Can't Post

I have played in a few of these and most of them have a "Card Speak" rule. This
means the cards when turned face up after all betting is resolved following the
river then the winning hand shown takes the pot. this is regardless of what the
person declares or what they think they have. Even if you put them on top of the
muck face up your hand can still win.

Most of the time the guys that argue these things are already known to the
people running the game so don;t be afraid to call the guy over as he will
clarify the rules and ensure the pot goes to the right person.

One thing that helps is to be consistent with creating a proper muck and pot
when you are dealer. Some at the table may know the rules but not how to do this
correctly.

Here is the rule page for one of the games in my area.

Says a man who then goes on to whine inconsolably at some length.

And I meant "Killing dead hand". My apologies to the OP.

Thank you! I should be able to read these and learn more about the rules.
