The big question is, what will the rake be compared to their live games.

If you think it will be anything but the same, you are kidding yourself.

I looked at these tables for a local card room and that was the first question
everybody asked. Turns out it's not rocket science but somewhat clever.

My feeling is that regular card room poker players will not trust them. Internet
players might.

Re: Hollywood Park set to open computerized poker tables [In reply to]Can't Post

There was a TV report in Los Angeles about these new tables and the
technology a couple of weeks ago.

The hole cards appear on each players screen "face down," but when the
player cups his hands around the hole cards, the technology flips the
cards over so they can be viewed. Remove your cupped hands and the
cards turn face down again.

Regarding the rake: it will be less, obviously.

And no dealer tips.

That's my understanding.

I have no idea what the rake will be on the computer games. Logic would say
it should be lower than live games because of the reduced labor cost. On
the other hand, the dealers would probably protest a lower rake and see it
as a threat to their job security. Time will tell.

As most players don't have a clue about how much the rake costs them, I
would expect it to be the same. But you'd still save on tokes.

These tables are expensive so the rake will probably be the same. The real
benefit is the hands per hour is 2x and of course no dealers to deal with.

Are these computer tables leased or purchased by the card club?

If ou can 'fix' a slot machine...so much so that before they pay a
jackpot they come and break it down to make sure it wasn't
'malfunctioning,' then you can certainly fix these games as well.

I prefer to stick with the dealer.

That being said, I am sure the machines cannot cost too much. I have
seen some pretty complex arcade machines, and I know they retail for
around $30K. Even at a dollar a game, they won't make nearly as much
as a machine with a $4-5 raker per hand.

If arcade operators can make money off of a $30K machine at a few
quarters per game, then Hollywood ojer is going to make a mint off of
these games.

If they lease them, then they are giving money away to the
manufacturer. But if the manufacturer is smart, they will try to lease
them instead of selling them outright. This is the model that
Shufflemaster has followed, and it has worked out well for them because
they have a small niche market as would presumably be the market for
poker arcade machines.

At the end of the day, these machines aren't much different than the
old Sigma Derby Horse Racing Games/Slots that used to be found all over
Vegas and now are very hard to find. I have to say, I have had some
fun times playing this -EV game due to the people I've been playing
with. It is hands down my favorite slot machine ever made.

Here is a photo:

http://tinyurl.com/rkjcp

I couldn't find any photos of the mechanical clop-clop horses, from
above.

Sadly, as casinos phase out coin in, these machines are being retired.
See this page for a petition to save the Sigma Derby from Extinction at
the MGM.

Here is what the modern version looks like, although I have never seen
one ins the US.

Well then the house has an excuse to keep the rake as high as in live games.
Can't make the dealers feel very good though.
