User Info Why should I register?
Put simply, registration allows you to fully participate in the forum! Depending on the forum you’re visiting and its administrator, unregistered users may not be permitted to view or post messages. Once you’ve registered, posts that have been made since you last visited each forum will be specially marked and the number of new posts in each forum will be displayed, allowing you to keep updated on recent forum events more easily. How do I register?
Click the Click here to login link at the top of the forum. You will be brought to a login menu. Click the Sign Me Up! link. You will be prompted to enter a username, a password and an email address. Your username will be the name that appears beside your posts and private messages. Your password should be something that is easy for you to remember, but difficult for other people to guess. The email address that you enter will not be visible to other forum users, and will only be used by forum administrators to contact you if you request it. You also have the option of using or not using cookies by default when you login. Once you complete the form, check your email and visit the confirmation link that has been sent to you. Your registration is now complete! Login to begin using the forum. After doing so, you may wish to click the “Edit Profile” link to add information about yourself to your User Profile. What are cookies?
When registering and logging in, you will be given the option of using cookies. Cookies are small files that will be saved to your computer’s hard drive that automatically log you in to the forum each time you visit. Cookies do not contain your actual username or password, but a unique member ID number. What happens if I forget my password?
Click the “Lost Your Password?” link in the Login menu and enter your username in the form provided. A temporary password will be sent to the email address you specified when you registered. Login using the temporary password, and then change your password in your User Profile. Be sure to change your password as soon as you login, as the temporary password will only work once. What is my User Profile? How do I modify it?
Your User Profile is a customizable record containing personal information as well as various forum settings related to signatures, private messages, cookies, etc. Some of this information (such as Location, Occupation, ICQ number, etc.) will be displayed when someone clicks on your username in the forum.
To edit your User Profile, click on the “Edit Profile” button at the top of the forum, then click the “User Profile” button. Click the “Make Profile Changes” button after you have modified your profile. What is my Display Profile? How do I modify it?
Your Display Profile is a customizable record that controls the way in which you view the forum. The number of threads and posts displayed per page, textbox sizes, threaded/flat views and more can all be modified in your Display Profile.
To edit your Display Profile, click on the “Edit Profile” button at the top of the forum, then click the “Display Profile” button. Click the “Make Profile Changes” button after you have modified your profile.
Threads/Posts Why can’t I start a thread/post a reply/view a forum?
If you haven’t registered, you may not be given access to or posting privileges in certain individual forums or the entire forum system itself, depending on how the administrator has configured security options.
If you’ve registered but can’t perform certain actions, you might not be logged in. Check the menu at the top of the page: if the “Edit Profile” and “Messages” icons aren’t displayed, you’re not logged in. Click the “Login” button in the top-right corner of the page to do so.
If you’re logged in but still can’t get to where you want to be, you’re probably trying to access functions or areas that can only be accessed by moderators or administrators. What are collapsed/expanded views?
While viewing forums in a collapsed view, only the details of the first post in a thread will be displayed. The expanded view displays the details of all posts within a thread. Collapsed/expanded views can be toggled with the “Collapsed View/Expand All Threads” button at the top of the list of threads. Individual threads can be expanded and collapsed using the buttons to the left of each thread’s title. See the Legend at the bottom of the thread list for details about these buttons. What are post styles?
While composing a post, the drop-down “Post Styles” menu allows you to choose from several post styles. These styles determine how your post will be displayed. If you select “Markup”, for example, all text markup that you enter in your post will be converted and displayed. If you select “Plain Text Only”, no text will be converted and your post will be displayed exactly as you type it. HTML may also be an available post style. Available post styles are set by administrators and may vary from forum to forum. Can I include HTML in my posts?
Most forums do not usually have HTML enabled. If the administrator has decided to enable HTML in their forum, however, you will be able to select “HTML” from the drop-down “Post Style” option in the Post menu. What is markup? How do I use it in my posts?
Markup allows you to modify the text of your messages: icons, colours and other text effects can be added to your messages using markup code. Click the “Get Markup Help” link in the Post menu to see a complete list of available markup code. Markup can be added by typing in the appropriate code, such as bold, or by clicking the markup buttons in the Post menu: . Click a markup button to insert the first tag, for example. Type the text you wish to be modified, “bold” in this case, and then click the closing markup button to insert the closing tag, in this case. bold will appear as bold when your post is being viewed. How do I add smilies to my posts?
Smilies can be inserted in a post by entering the appropriate markup code, such as [:)] and [:(], or by clicking the smilie buttons in the Post menu. How do I attach files to posts?
Not all administrators allow the attachment of files to posts. If you want to attach a file to your post and attachments are permitted, click the “Browse” button in the “Attachment” section of the Post menu. Browse for the desired file and click “Open”. Next, click the “Upload attachment” button. Attached files appear below posts while viewing a thread. Note that the administrator may have set a limit on the size and number of files being attached to posts. How do I edit/delete my posts?
Depending on whether the administrator has these options enabled or not, you may be able to edit or delete your posts. The administrator also has the option of setting a cutoff time after which posts cannot be edited or deleted. While viewing your post, click the “Edit” or “Delete” links in the top right corner of the post. Posts that have been edited will have a message indicating the time of the edit and the user who performed it. What is my signature? How do I use/modify it?
A signature is a small amount of text that can be automatically included at the end of all of your posts. It can be your name, your email address, a link, a slogan, a quote, etc.
You can define and modify your signature in your User Profile. Note that if you modify your signature, posts you made before modifying your signature will be updated to contain the new signature.
Each time you make a post, you have the option of including your signature by checking or unchecking the “Append signature to post” box. What is email notification?
When you make a post, you have the option of being notified by email as soon as a user replies to your post. You can turn this option on and off in individual posts with the “email notification” checkbox and choose whether or not to have the option enabled by default in your User Profile.
Messages How do I send messages to other users?
There are two ways of sending messages:
While viewing the “Messages” menu, click the “Send Private Message” button. You will be brought to a message composition menu similar to the Post menu. Enter the username of the person you wish to send the message to in the “Recipient” field and compose a message the way you would a post.
Messages can also be sent by clicking on the username of the desired recipient and then clicking the “Send Private Message” button.
Note that some users may have disabled private messages in their User Profile. You will not be able to send messages to any such user. How do I view/manage my messages?
While viewing the “Messages” menu, you will see two menus while viewing your messages: one containing all messages that have been sent to you, another containing all messages that you have sent. You can view messages from either of these menus by clicking on the subject of the message you want, or delete them by checking the boxes beside them and clicking the “Delete” button.
While viewing a message, you can delete it, or send a reply to the user who sent the message to you. What is email notification?
You have the option of being notified by email as soon as someone sends you a message. You can turn this option on and off in your User Profile.
